“Black Phone 2” Scares Up $10 Million Opening Day, While “Good Fortune” Struggles at Box Office
The horror sequel ”Black Phone 2″ launched with a $10 million opening day, signaling a strong start for the Blumhouse and Global Pictures release. Despite the success of “Black Phone 2”, several other films faced challenges at the box office this weekend.
In second place, Disney’s “Tron: Ares” earned $3 million on friday and is projecting an $11 million sophomore weekend, representing a 65% drop. The film’s North american total is expected to reach $54 million after 10 days, but its $180 million production budget appears unlikely to be recouped theatrically given its disappointing domestic and overseas performance.
Warner Bros.’ awards contender “One Battle After Another” is currently tracking for fourth place, earning $1.1 million on Friday, a 45% decrease from the previous week. Paul Thomas Anderson’s film starring Leonardo DiCaprio has earned $59 million in North america after 22 days, but is estimated to lose around $100 million theatrically, despite a production budget exceeding $130 million.
Paramount’s “Roofman,” featuring Channing Tatum, is falling to fifth place with $1.1 million earned on its second Friday. The film is looking at a $3.6 million sophomore weekend, a 55% drop from its opening. Domestic gross is expected to hit $15.4 million through Sunday, a muted run even against its $19 million production budget.
Angel Studios’ World War II thriller “Truth & Treason” opened in 2,106 venues to $1.1 million on Friday and is headed for a $2.8 million opening weekend, landing in sixth place. The film received a “A” grade from Cinema Score.
Amazon MGM’s R-rated campus drama “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, expanded to 1,238 locations and earned approximately $650,000 on Friday, projecting seventh place. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August to negative reviews, received a “C-” grade from Cinema Score.
Notably, the opening of “Good Fortune” – starring Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Sandra oh and Keke Palmer – was a muted kickoff for the $30 million production, earning only $3 million on its opening weekend despite solid reviews and positive audience buzz (Cinema Score: “B+”). This highlights the difficulty of opening original R-rated comedies in the current theatrical landscape, tho Sony’s ”One of Them days” ($50 million domestic total) demonstrated potential for success earlier in the year.
