Oscar Piastri and McLaren team principal Andrea Stella addressed the contact between Piastri and Lando Norris at the Singapore Grand Prix, confirming internal consequences for Norris that will extend through the remainder of the Formula 1 season. The incident, occurring on the first lap of the race, damaged Piastri’s front wing and ultimately impacted both drivers’ race results.
the team has internally deemed Norris’s actions on the opening lap “unacceptable,” according to Stella, tho specific details of the repercussions are being withheld to avoid providing competitive advantages to rival teams. While the rules governing driver conduct will not be altered, Norris has “taken responsibility” for the collision, and the team will operate under a revised internal framework for the remaining races. Piastri currently leads the Drivers’ Championship with 22 points over teammate Norris, while Max Verstappen trails the leader by 63 points.
“I think the talks from Singapore were very productive with everyone involved,” Stella said. “I think the conclusion was what happens in Singapore is not how we want to go racing as a team, and ultimately Lando has taken responsibility for that.”
Piastri emphasized the team’s focus on moving forward. “That’s in the past now, and the rules won’t change as of that. Ultimately, we’ve got that framework in place for a reason and ther’s no reason for that to change now. It’s been dealt with, and now looking forward to the future.”
The team declined to publicly detail the nature of the consequences for Norris, citing competitive concerns. “Ultimately we’ve got to race against nine other teams as well, 18 others, and we don’t want to give away anything that is sensitive to our team,” Piastri explained. “I think it’s more than fair to keep that for ourselves, as we don’t want to give other teams an advantage on what it might very well be.”
Piastri stated the team will strive to race within internally defined acceptable parameters. “I think we’re going to try and go racing as best as we can within what we think is acceptable as a team. That’s really all we can try and do,but I think in the race I wasn’t that happy with what happened. The team has decided that wasn’t an acceptable Lap 1 and we’ve dealt with it.”
