Toronto, ON – October 22, 2023 – A late-season injury has forced the Toronto Blue Jays to make a significant roster change ahead of their continued pursuit in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). Outfielder Anthony Santander has been replaced by Joey Loperfido on the 26-man roster.
Santander’s Postseason Ends Due to Injury
The move effectively ends Santander’s first postseason run with the Blue Jays. The Venezuelan outfielder was removed from the lineup during game 2 of the ALCS due to back stiffness. According to MLB rules, Santander will be ineligible for inclusion on the World Series roster should the Blue Jays advance.
Santander’s 2023 season was hampered by injury, limiting him to just 54 regular season games. He finished with a .175 batting average and six home runs. His playoff performance yielded a 3-for-15 showing without any extra-base hits.
Loperfido Earns ALCS Opportunity
Joey Loperfido, 26, has been called up to fill Santander’s spot. While primarily a Minor League player in 2023, Loperfido demonstrated his potential with the Blue Jays, recording an impressive .879 OPS in 41 Major League games.
Loperfido offers positional versatility, having played all three outfield positions, as well as first base, during his time in the Majors.
Santander’s Acquisition and Initial Expectations
Santander was a key offseason acquisition for the Blue jays, brought in to bolster their outfield depth and provide a power threat. Though, inflammation in his left shoulder sidelined him for a significant portion of the regular season, preventing him from fully realizing his potential in a Blue jays uniform.
