Flu Wave Sweeps Austria, Health Officials Urge ‍Vaccination and Precautions

Vienna, Austria ⁣- A surge in ⁢cold and influenza cases is currently sweeping across Austria, ‍prompting health‌ officials to recommend‌ vaccination and increased preventative measures.⁣ The approaching flu season,‍ typically peaking in december and January, ‌is arriving ⁢earlier than usual, raising concerns⁤ about potential strain on the healthcare⁣ system.

The current wave is characterized by a rise ⁤in respiratory illnesses, impacting ‌individuals‌ of all ages. experts emphasize the importance of protecting vulnerable mucous membranes ⁢- in the mouth, nose, and eyes – from infection. Wearing particle-filtering masks⁢ is again being recommended, not only⁢ for‍ personal⁤ protection but also to limit transmission to others. Individuals experiencing symptoms are strongly advised to ‍limit ⁣contact with‌ others, particularly when seeking medical ‌attention, and to continue masking even after⁤ symptoms subside due to the possibility ⁣of lingering infectiousness.

A recent debate has ignited⁤ between the Austrian Social security Fund (ÖGK) and the⁤ Austrian‍ Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) regarding sick leave policies. Following calls from the WKO for stricter monitoring of sick leave to address potential abuse, ÖGK chairman Andreas Huss⁣ responded, stating,‌ “To suspect all employees here across⁢ the board is not possible at all.”⁣ Huss ⁤further asserted that the WKO’s demands are “incomprehensible,” emphasizing that sick leave is already ⁤consistently monitored.WKO General Secretary Jochen Danninger (ÖVP) previously‍ argued‍ for ‍”consistent ⁣sanctions” against intentional work disruption, advocating for “obligation to report and⁢ control” with nationwide uniform checks, “mandatory⁢ controls in case of suspicion,” and generally stricter health insurance company oversight.
