Illinois Attorney General Sues State Farm to compel Data Release in Homeowner Insurance Investigation
SPRINGFIELD, IL – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has filed a lawsuit against State Farm, the nation’s largest homeowner insurance company, seeking a court order to compel the company to fully cooperate with a state investigation into its homeowner insurance policies and premium practices. The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court, aims to force State Farm to provide data and data requested by the Illinois Department of Insurance (IDOI).
The IDOI launched the investigation in November 2024 following concerns that State Farm’s homeowner insurance premiums have risen “drastically” in recent years.while the state currently lacks the authority to regulate insurance rates-a power Gov. JB Pritzker has urged lawmakers to grant-the IDOI does oversee insurance company business practices and aims to ensure a competitive marketplace. The Attorney General’s office asserts that full cooperation from State Farm is crucial for effective oversight.
“We must ensure all Illinois homeowners are being treated fairly,” Raoul said in a news release. “State insurance departments are the primary regulators of insurance companies, so it is crucially important that State farm, headquartered in Illinois, cooperate with the department’s oversight of its business practices.”
Raoul is requesting the court order State Farm to comply with the IDOI’s examination and provide necessary information to assess the state’s homeowner insurance market.State Farm, in a statement released through spokesperson Gina Morss-Fischer, said the company “remains committed to collaborating with the Illinois Department of Insurance to benefit Illinois customers” and values its partnerships with state leaders.
