Tragedy in Omoa: Two Children Dead, Several Critically Injured in Motorcycle Taxi-Truck Collision
Omoa, Cortes, Honduras – A devastating traffic accident in the community of San Marcos, Omoa, has claimed the lives of two children and left several others critically injured. The incident, which occurred Monday afternoon, involved a motorcycle taxi carrying students and a truck.
The victims have been identified as Jeferson Sebastian Serrano Mejía,8,a third-grade student,and his cousin,Daira Siloé López Serrano,9,a fourth-grade student.Both were traveling home from school at the time of the collision. Jeferson Sebastian was pronounced dead shortly after the accident, while Daira Siloé succumbed to her injuries hours later at the mario Catarino Rivas Hospital after being rushed there and placed on life support.
Along wiht the fatalities, six other children remain hospitalized in critical condition. They include: Íker Martínez Redondo, 7 (frist grade); Sebastián Serrano, 8 (third grade); Noha Serrano, 8 (third grade); Eylin Serrano, (third grade); Karla camila Martínez, 9 (fifth grade); and Dilcia Denise López, 12 (fifth grade).
Reports indicate the children were passengers on a motorcycle taxi – a common form of transportation for students in the area – when it was struck by a truck. Local residents and emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
the driver of the motorcycle taxi, identified as Alexis Velásquez, was also injured and is receiving medical attention. He had reportedly been contracted to transport the children from their schools.
Authorities have launched a full inquiry to determine the cause of the accident. This tragic event has deeply shaken the Omoa community, and grief is widespread as families grapple with the loss of these young lives and pray for the swift recovery of those injured.
