A pickup truck driver narrowly escaped rising floodwaters on North Carolina‘s Outer Banks after a dune breach sent waves crashing onto NC12 on October 12, 2025. The driver accelerated through the surging water,successfully reaching higher ground as the dune gave way.
The incident underscores the dangers of driving through floodwaters,even when others appear to be navigating them successfully. While several vehicles encountered the same conditions, officials with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) swiftly closed the roadway following the event, warning motorists against attempting to cross water-covered roads. Just one foot of water can carry away a vehicle, posing a significant risk to life and property.
Jamie Kritzer, assistant director of NCDOT communications, explained to CBS 17 that the breach occurred precisely as the pickup truck was traveling along the highway. “It was at that very time when the dune was breached,” Kritzer said.
according to Kritzer, the driver was able to “floor it” and drive through the rapidly rising water to safety.Other vehicles were similarly affected by the breach. “A dune breached there and a few cars got in the same jam,” Kritzer stated. “They made it through.”
NCDOT officials emphasized that the fortunate outcome for these drivers should not encourage others to risk driving through flooded areas. “It takes a foot of water to move a car – we want everyone to be careful,” Kritzer cautioned.
