Luke Littler claimed his second major title of 2024, defeating Luke Humphries to win the world grand Slam of Darts in a compelling display of darts on Sunday night.
Littler, who previously triumphed at the World Championship earlier this year, overcame a shaky start to dominate Humphries, ultimately winning the match and adding another prestigious trophy to his rapidly growing collection. The victory marks a critically important shift in dominance, considering Humphries won this event two years prior for his first major title – a time when Littler didn’t even possess a tour card.
The opening set was closely contested, with Littler needing 13 darts to hold in the second leg, and both players exchanging breaks of throw in legs three and four. Littler ultimately held on to secure the first set.
After establishing an early lead, Littler found his rhythm, while Humphries, appearing in his third consecutive Grand Prix final, struggled to capitalize on opportunities. Littler then secured the second set with a 64 checkout, preceded by a brilliant 177 in the fifth leg, and followed it up by winning the third set after Humphries missed four darts at double.
Littler continued his momentum, winning the fourth set in another final-leg decider.Humphries finaly registered a set win in the fifth, sensationally checking out 154.However,Littler refused to concede ground, winning the subsequent two sets to seal the victory.
Despite averaging 93.61 – slightly higher than Littler’s 92.15 - Humphries will be left to analyze what went wrong. Littler also outperformed humphries in maximum scores, hitting more 100-plus scores and 180s throughout the match.
Remarkably, between the two players, they have now claimed 15 of the last 21 major darts trophies, highlighting their consistent success and dominance in the sport.
