California Law Targets Loud Streaming Ads
SACRAMENTO, CA – A new California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom this week will prohibit streaming services from broadcasting advertisements at a higher volume than the content they interrupt. The legislation, effective july 1, applies to all companies serving consumers within the state, including popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max.
State Senator Tom Umberg, sponsor of the bill, stated the idea originated with his legislative director, whose newborn was disturbed by excessively loud ads.
the law expands upon existing federal regulations. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is already responsible for addressing excessively loud commercials on traditional television broadcast stations and cable, and this new measure extends those protections to the streaming realm. In February, the FCC reported receiving thousands of complaints over the years regarding loud commercials, with manny focused on streaming services.
the legislation aims to address a common consumer frustration with the practice of increasing ad volume to grab attention.
