California Law Targets Loud Streaming Ads

SACRAMENTO, CA – A new California law signed by Governor ⁤Gavin Newsom this week will ‍prohibit streaming ‌services from ⁢broadcasting advertisements at a higher volume than the content ⁢they interrupt. The legislation, effective july 1, applies to⁢ all companies serving consumers within the state, including ​popular platforms like YouTube, Netflix, ​Disney+, and HBO⁣ Max.

State Senator Tom Umberg,sponsor of the bill,stated the idea originated with his ⁣legislative director,whose newborn‌ was disturbed by excessively loud ads.‍

the law‍ expands upon‍ existing federal regulations.⁣ The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is ​already responsible for addressing ‍excessively loud⁤ commercials on traditional television broadcast stations ​and cable, and⁢ this new measure​ extends those protections to the streaming realm.​ In ‍February, the FCC reported receiving thousands of complaints over the years regarding loud commercials, with manny focused on streaming services.

the legislation aims to address a common consumer ⁤frustration with ‍the practice of increasing ad volume to grab attention.
