UCLA Dominates Michigan State, Solidifying Statement Win
EAST LANSING, Mich. – UCLA emphatically proved its upset victory over LSU was no fluke, delivering a commanding performance in a 35-13 rout of Michigan State Saturday at Spartan Stadium. The Bruins’ offense, led by quarterback Nico Iamaleava, and a relentless defense overwhelmed the Spartans, silencing a homecoming crowd and establishing UCLA as a force in the early college football season.
The win underscores a significant shift for a UCLA program seeking consistency after a stunning season-opening victory against a ranked LSU team.Saturday’s performance demonstrated the Bruins’ ability to replicate success and maintain focus, overcoming an early Michigan State touchdown to dominate the remainder of the contest.
UCLA’s attacking, disciplined defense forced multiple turnovers and stifled Michigan State after the Spartans scored on their opening drive.Special teams also contributed significantly, executing a trick play reminiscent of their game against Northwestern.Early in the second quarter, Cole Martin took the snap on a punt attempt and ran for 20 yards and a first down.
“Very similar,” special teams coordinator Millard Skipper said, ”but it went the opposite way - same formation, different direction.”
The Bruins capitalized on the play, with Iamaleava connecting with tight end Carson Berger for a three-yard touchdown. Later, edge rusher Devin Aupiu forced a fumble from Michigan State quarterback Katin Chiles, recovered by defensive tackle Siale Taupaki, giving UCLA possession at the Spartans’ 32-yard line. Iamaleava subsequently found wide receiver Titus Mokiao-Atimalala for a 12-yard touchdown, extending UCLA’s lead to 24-7.
UCLA extended its lead with 24 consecutive points, building a seemingly insurmountable halftime advantage. The Spartans were met with boos from their own fans as they headed to the locker room. A Mateen bhaghani field-goal attempt late in the second quarter hit the left upright, the only blemish on an otherwise dominant first half for the Bruins.
“Best part really is just the togetherness we have in the locker room,” martin said. “We came together. We’ve never altered. We’ve always stayed together. Nobody’s quit on one another. And that was really the best part for me, just knowing that whatever we go thru, we’re going to have each other at the end of the day.”
