Cougars Seek First win Over Oklahoma State in Over a Decade
HOUSTON, TX – The University of Houston football team aims to break a 14-year losing streak against Oklahoma State when the two teams meet this Saturday. This matchup marks only the second contest between the programs since a 45-35 Houston victory in 2009, reigniting a rivalry that had been dormant for over a decade.
A win for the Cougars would not only move their overall record against the Cowboys to 11-10-1 and secure their first victory since 2009, but also improve their Big 12 Conference record to 7-14 all-time. For Head Coach Willie Fritz, it would represent his first career win against Oklahoma State, as he has never previously coached against the Cowboys. The game carries important weight as Houston looks to build momentum in its second season within the Big 12.
The last meeting between the teams took place on November 18, 2023, in Houston, resulting in a 43-30 Oklahoma State win. Quarterback Donovan Smith led the Cougars’ offense in that game, completing 17 of 29 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown, while also contributing 63 rushing yards and another score. Despite the loss, Houston’s defense showcased its playmaking ability with an Isaiah Hamilton interception returned for a 57-yard touchdown and a safety recorded by Malik Robinson.
