Fenerbahce Istanbul Stuns VakifBank in Five-Set Thriller to Claim Turkish Super Cup
Fenerbahce Istanbul, led by recent world Cup winner Alessia Orro, completed a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory (23-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 18-16) over VakifBank Istanbul to secure their sixth Turkish Super Cup title. The win marks Orro’s official debut with Fenerbahce after friendlies played in recent weeks.
The comeback was fueled by stellar performances from Russian spiker Arina Fedorovtseva (25 points) and Turkish bomber Melissa Vargas (25 points, named MVP), alongside 4 crucial points orchestrated by orro. fenerbahce coach Marcello Abbondanza also effectively utilized central players Agnieszka Korneluk (11 points) and Hande Baladin (8 points), with Asli kalac adding 6.
Orro’s triumph represents her first club-level championship in four years, following CEV Cup victories with Busto Arsizio in 2019 and Monza (later Milan) in 2021.
Despite a strong showing from VakifBank, coached by Giovanni Guiddetti, the team faltered despite 25 points from Serbian opposite Tijana Boskovic – returning from a world Cup injury – and 20 points from French spiker Helena Cazaute, both recent additions to the club.
The Turkish league season begins this weekend, with Fenerbahce visiting Aras Kargo on Sunday, October 12th, and VakifBank traveling to Zeren Spor on Saturday, October 11th.
