Gaza Faces Widespread Devastation and Humanitarian Crisis After Two Years of Conflict
Gaza – Two years of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas have left a devastating mark on Palestinian lives in Gaza, resulting in mass displacement, widespread destruction, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
The conflict has forced Palestinians to be displaced multiple times, moving between apartments and makeshift tent camps for survival. Squalid tent cities now cover much of southern Gaza. Displacements have separated families, and heavy bombardment has left thousands buried under rubble. Israeli troops routinely round up and detain men, searching for suspected Hamas ties, further fracturing families.
Israel’s military has gained control of the vast majority of Gaza, concentrating the Palestinian population into a small zone along the southern coast. Israeli forces have flattened or bulldozed entire neighborhoods of Gaza City and agricultural towns, constructing new roads and military posts.
Satellite imagery analyzed by the U.N. Satellite Center indicates at least 102,067 buildings have been destroyed, creating a blanket of rubble roughly 12 times the size of the Great Pyramid of giza. The destruction includes schools, universities, medical clinics, mosques, greenhouses, and homes.
The humanitarian situation is dire, with at least 30% of the population going days without food. Hundreds crowd charity kitchens for basic sustenance, and babies are suffering from severe malnutrition, weighing less than they did at birth. In august, the world’s leading authority on food crises declared gaza City to be in famine, a determination Israel disputes.
Towns previously known for agriculture, such as Khuzaa – once a breadbasket for Khan Younis producing wheat and cereals – have been virtually erased by Israeli bombardment and demolitions between May and October 2025.
As the conflict enters its third year, Israel continues an offensive aimed at taking over Gaza City and eliminating Hamas militants, while also seeking to free the 48 hostages remaining in Gaza, approximately 20 of whom are believed to be alive.Since the war began, 465 Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza.
A new American peace plan has been proposed, even as Israeli tanks and ground troops advance towards the heart of Gaza City.
