Western North Carolina Communities Receive Vital Funding for Hurricane Helene Recovery

Raleigh, NC – Governor Josh Stein announced today a ⁢meaningful boost to recovery ‍efforts in western North Carolina, with over ‍$9 million ⁣in grants awarded to 14 nonprofit Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADs). These‍ funds are earmarked for critical housing repair and reconstruction⁢ projects, directly assisting homeowners⁢ still grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane ⁣Helene.

Supporting the Front Lines of Disaster Relief

The grants, made possible by the North⁤ Carolina General assemblys passage of S.L. ‍2025-2, prioritize organizations actively engaged in rebuilding efforts within counties designated under the Federal Disaster‍ Declaration. This targeted approach ensures resources reach those communities most ⁣severely impacted by the storm.

Recognizing the ongoing need, the General Assembly has further committed to supporting these vital organizations, recently adding an additional $18 million to the program.A new ⁣funding opportunity declaration is expected shortly, promising continued support for recovery initiatives across the region.

Progress Already Underway: Over 500 Homes Repaired

This⁢ latest round of funding builds on previous allocations. In January ⁤2025, ‍Governor Stein announced a $6 million investment split between⁢ Baptists on Mission and Habitat for Humanity. Thanks to these state-funded grants, these two organizations⁣ have already successfully completed repairs on more than 500 homes, offering tangible⁤ relief to ⁤families striving to rebuild their lives.

Local Organizations Receive Key Funding

Among⁤ the recipients, operation⁣ Helo received a considerable $500,000 grant to power its “Restoring Roots & Rebuilding⁢ Lives” program. This funding will enable the association to repair 20 to 30 homes in the Maiden area, providing crucial assistance to residents in⁤ need.

The Western‌ NC Conference of United Methodist Church was also awarded $300,000,dedicated to repairing and replacing homes in the western North Carolina counties that experienced the most significant damage ‍from Hurricane Helene.
