Orangeburg, S.C. – South Carolina State University (SCSU) remains on lockdown and has canceled classes Monday following two seperate shootings Saturday that left one guest dead and two others injured.
The first shooting occurred on campus, injuring a guest who was fleeing the scene, according to a university statement.Hours later, a second shooting injured another guest, who was initially taken to a local hospital before being airlifted to another facility where he remains hospitalized, the south Carolina Law Enforcement division (SLED) confirmed.
Neither SLED nor the university has released the identities of the victims. SCSU President Alexander Conyers stated Sunday that no students were injured in either incident.
“The shootings are not believed to be connected at this time, however, SLED’s investigations are active and ongoing,” SLED said in a statement.
The shootings took place after the university’s homecoming game, leading to the cancellation of Saturday night’s homecoming concert and all Sunday events.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who lost her life and to all who have been affected,” Conyers said in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate these senseless acts of violence.”
The campus is currently restricted to students, employees, and investigators and remains “secured on lockdown.” Counseling services are available to members of the SCSU community.
Anyone with information regarding the shootings is encouraged to contact SLED.
