consultation Begins on Controversial Tollerton Airport Housing Plan
West Bridgford, UK – Rushcliffe Borough Council has launched a public consultation on its draft guidance for the redevelopment of the former Tollerton Airport site into housing. The plan, detailed in a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) published on Thursday, outlines requirements for development types, access, and necessary facilities. A public meeting to discuss the proposals will be held at Gamston Community Hall on October 22nd.
The proposed development has faced consistent opposition from local residents, who have previously organized petitions and protests, as reported by the BBC. Tollerton Parish Council has formally requested a pause to the consultation process.
Concerns center on the viability of the council’s plan, with a spokesman for the Save Nottingham Airfield Group stating the proposals are “unviable and unrealistic.” The group has also criticized the five-week consultation period, arguing it is insufficient for a project of this scale, particularly compared to the six weeks allotted for previous SPDs.
“That’s not fair or clear for a proposal of this scale,” the spokesman said. ”Still, we are confident the public will rise to the challenge and make their voices heard. This SPD will be robustly scrutinised, and we believe it will be shown to be fundamentally flawed and not fit for purpose.”
The redevelopment of Tollerton Airport has been a long-running issue, with ongoing debate about the impact on local infrastructure, green space, and the surrounding community. The SPD aims to provide a framework for development, but faces meaningful hurdles in gaining public acceptance.
