Gophers Fall at #1 Ohio State; Homecoming on Deck
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Top-ranked Ohio State overpowered Minnesota 42-3 Saturday night, handing the golden Gophers their first Big Ten loss of the season. A dominant offensive performance by the Buckeyes, coupled with a stifling defense, proved too much for Minnesota to overcome.
Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin passed for 326 yards and three touchdowns, completing 23 of 27 passes. Wide receiver Carnell Tate was Sayin’s primary target,finishing with 183 yards on nine receptions,including a 44-yard touchdown on the opening play of the Buckeyes’ fifth series. Jeremiah smith added two receiving touchdowns, while CJ Donaldson, bo Jackson, and Lincoln Kienholz contributed rushing scores.
Minnesota managed a 27-yard field goal from Brady Denaburg on their opening drive, but the Buckeyes’ defense quickly shut down the gophers’ offense. Minnesota gained 66 yards on their first possession but were limited to just 35 yards on their next seven series, including five three-and-outs. Drake Lindsey completed 15 of 26 passes for 94 yards for the Gophers.
The Buckeyes took control early, scoring touchdowns on three consecutive possessions after Jayden Fielding missed a 53-yard field goal attempt. Ohio State’s defense continued its impressive season, maintaining its streak of not allowing a red zone touchdown.
Minnesota falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Big Ten play, while Ohio State improves to 5-0 and 2-0 in conference action. The Gophers return home next Saturday to host Purdue.
