COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio state’s dominant performance against Minnesota extended beyond the scoreboard, with players expressing confidence and highlighting the impact of new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. Wide receiver Carnell Tate asserted his and teammate Jeremiah Smith’s status as the nation’s top receiving duo, while defensive players emphasized a growing team chemistry and strategic execution.
Tate confidently stated,”For sure,me and Jeremiah [Smith] are the two best receivers in the country,” adding the Minnesota defense was “shocked” by Ohio State’s offensive capabilities and “tried us in man,and we made them pay for it.” He also praised quarterback Julian Sayin, noting his “elite ball placement” and veteran-like approach to the game.
Linebacker Sonny Styles credited Patricia with fostering a deeper understanding of the game amongst the defense. “It’s bigger than just understanding the play and understanding your job, like, understanding what the offense is trying to do, the defenses they’re trying to attack, their mindset throughout the game,” Styles explained. He also highlighted the team’s growing brotherhood, stating, “Coach Patricia kind of instilled that mindset into us, you know, we’re always one out there. And we’re just going out there as 11 brothers.” Styles pointed to the defense’s success in the red zone as crucial for winning games. Despite allowing only two touchdowns all season, Styles believes the defense is still capable of advancement, saying, “I think we’re actually leaving a lot of meat on the bone. There’s still a lot of meat on the bone.”
Defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr. discussed the successful punt return trick play, expressing disappointment at not scoring a touchdown. “I really wanted to take that to the house. I was kind of upset about that, but yeah, great to execute that today.” He also emphasized the increased enjoyment he’s experiencing this season with more playing time and a closer team dynamic, especially after the road win at Washington. Styles lauded Patricia as “great,” adding, ”He gives us confidence as a defense. We certainly know what we’re about to run, we’re situationally aware, and yeah, I’m very appreciative of him as a coach.” He reiterated the team’s overall enjoyment, stating, “It’s an opportunity to go out there and showcase what we’ve been working on and put our preparation on display.”
