Pope Leon XIV Hails Progress in Gaza Peace Talks as Negotiations Set to Resume in Cairo
pope leon XIV welcomed what he called “significant advances” in peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, as Israeli negotiators and hamas representatives are expected to meet in Cairo on sunday to discuss a peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump.
“These last hours, in a dramatic context in the Middle East, significant advances have been carried out in peace negotiations, which, I hope, will lead to the expected results as soon as possible,” the Pope said after a Mass in the Vatican.
The Pope’s remarks follow Hamas‘s positive response to the Trump plan.he reiterated his call for a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, urging all parties to pursue “a fair and lasting peace.”
“I call everyone responsible for engaging on this path, a ceasefire and the release of the hostages,” leon XIV insisted, adding he was “deeply saddened by the immense suffering endured by the Palestinian people in Gaza.”
The head of the catholic Church also voiced his “concern in the face of the rise of anti-Semitic hatred in the world,” citing the terrorist attack against a synagogue in Manchester on Thursday, which resulted in two deaths and three serious injuries.
