Williams Drivers Disqualified from Qualifying Following DRS System Violation
Both Williams drivers have been excluded from the qualifying results following a technical inspection by the FIA, the governing body of Formula 1. The disqualification stems from a violation of the technical regulations concerning the Drag Reduction System (DRS).
During post-qualifying checks, the FIA discovered an issue with the DRS system on both Williams cars. The system was examined, specifically focusing on the gap measurement of the component resembling a circular pizza slicer – a critical element in ensuring compliance with the rules. The regulations stipulate that this gap must not exceed 85mm.
“Both cars exceeded the maximum limit of 85 mm on both sides of the outer part of the rear wing,” stated FIA Technical Delegate Jo Bauer. This constitutes a breach of Article 3.10.10 g of the technical regulations.
Sports commissioners subsequently confirmed the exclusion of both drivers from the qualifying results. The team acknowledged the discrepancy between their pre-qualification measurements and those conducted by the FIA.
According too the sports commissioners’ statement, “The contestant admitted that even though his own measurement before the qualification showed that the component was in tolerance, measurements made by the FIA delegates revealed a larger gap than allowed, and thus the rear wing did not meet the required dimensions.”
Crucially, the team did not dispute the accuracy of the FIA’s measurement process or equipment.”The competitors did not question the measurement, methodology or accuracy of the FIA measuring device. The competitors fully accepted the FIA measurement results and acknowledged that the rear wing mounted on the car did not meet the requirements of the technical rules,” the statement concluded.
This incident echoes a similar disqualification last year in Monaco, where both Haas drivers were penalized for a comparable DRS infringement.
