Babis‘ ANO Party Secures Victory in Czech Parliamentary Election
Prague,Czech Republic – Billionaire Andrej Babis’ ANO party has emerged as the winner of the Czech Republic’s parliamentary election, though falling short of a majority, according to preliminary results. The outcome, largely anticipated by polls, throws the future of the country’s government into uncertainty as Babis navigates potential coalition partners.
The ANO party, led by the former prime minister, will likely need to forge an alliance to govern. Babis has begun discussions with two smaller, right-wing, eurosceptic parties that crossed the 5% threshold for parliamentary portrayal: the Motorists for Themselves, focused on opposing the EU’s Green Deal, and the Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD) party, led by Czech-Japanese entrepreneur Tomio Okamura.
ANO shares significant common ground with the Motorists, including opposition to the EU’s emissions targets and the planned ban on new petrol and diesel car sales after 2035. Both parties also resist increased financial burdens on Czech households related to cleaner energy initiatives. The relationship with the SPD, though, presents potential challenges. The SPD entered the election in a formal alliance with several far-right fringe parties, possibly complicating internal party dynamics.
Furthermore, Babis has explicitly rejected a key SPD policy demand – referendums on EU or NATO membership.During the campaign, babis criticized the outgoing government’s support for Ukraine, stating, “Czech mothers nothing, and Ukrainians everything,” while Okamura advocated for the mass deportation of Ukrainian refugees – a position unlikely to gain traction with Babis.
Despite these hurdles, Babis may opt to lead a minority cabinet sustained by the support of both the Motorists and the SPD. The outcome of coalition talks will determine the next phase of Czech politics and the direction of the country’s policies on key issues including energy, immigration, and it’s relationship with the European Union.
