Devils Acquire Forward Zack MacEwen in Trade with Ottawa Senators
NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Devils have bolstered their forward depth, acquiring zack MacEwen from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Kurtis MacDermid, the team announced today. Devils President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed the transaction.
MacEwen, 29, split the 2023-24 season between Ottawa and their American Hockey League affiliate, Belleville. He registered two goals and one assist in 21 NHL games last season, adding 21 penalty minutes. In 23 AHL contests, the forward tallied seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, alongside 29 penalty minutes.
A physical presence at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, MacEwen has appeared in 237 career NHL regular-season games across seven seasons with Vancouver, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Ottawa. He has accumulated 34 points (17 goals, 17 assists) and 323 penalty minutes. MacEwen also has seven Stanley Cup Playoff games under his belt, appearing with Vancouver in 2020 and Los Angeles in 2023.
Notably, MacEwen played under current Devils assistant coach Brad Shaw during the 2022-23 season with Philadelphia. Prior to joining the NHL, he spent six seasons in the AHL with Utica (Vancouver affiliate), Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia affiliate), and Belleville (Ottawa affiliate), totaling 122 points (50 goals, 72 assists) in 190 games, with 193 penalty minutes.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Vancouver on March 2, 2017, MacEwen hails from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He honed his skills in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 2014-15 to 2016-17, playing for Moncton (2014-15, 2015-16) and Gatineau (2016-17). The right-handed shot adds a versatile element to the Devils’ roster.
