Detroit Lions Defensive Tackle Alim McNeill is a 50/50 chance to play against the Cincinnati Bengals, Head coach Dan Campbell stated Friday. The Lions have been carefully managing McNeill’s return from an injury, limiting his participation in practices this week. A final decision on his availability will be made after Friday’s practice.
McNeill has expressed a desire to play, but the coaching staff is prioritizing a cautious approach. “I know he wants to play, but we want to be smart, too,” Campbell said.”so this’ll be one of those decisions we’ll probably make after practice.” The team has been collecting data on McNeill’s health through their sports science team and appears encouraged by the progress.
Campbell detailed a gradual increase in McNeill’s practice workload, noting he received more reps on Thursday and will participate in a reduced capacity on Friday. “We got a lot of data on him right now,” Campbell continued. “Certainly (we’ll consider), what he says-How does he feel? What’s his comfort level? Confidence? But also being smart with it.”
Beyond McNeill’s individual readiness, Campbell highlighted the potential benefit of his presence on the field for rookie Tyleik Williams. “One of the biggest ways is just seeing the guy and being around him,” Campbell explained. “You can only learn so much from a coach…A guy like Mac or (Aidan) Hutch(enson) or some of these (other veterans can show him): this is what it needs to look like.”
The Lions will conclude their week with a practice Friday afternoon, with the official injury report expected to be released between 3:30 and 4 p.m. ET.This report will provide a definitive update on McNeill’s status for Sunday’s game against the Bengals.
