Djokovic Challenges Alcaraz‘s Criticism of Packed Tennis Schedule
SHANGHAI – Novak Djokovic has subtly challenged comments made by Carlos Alcaraz regarding the demanding ATP Tour calendar, following Alcaraz’s withdrawal from the Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament.
Alcaraz, currently ranked world number one, cited “physical problems” as the reason for his absence from the Shanghai event, using the possibility to criticize the congested schedule. “It is really too tense. They must adapt it,” Alcaraz stated, directing his comments towards ATP leadership.
Djokovic, competing in Shanghai, initially indicated agreement with Alcaraz, who defeated him in the US Open semi-finals. Though, he subsequently pointed out what he perceived as a contradiction.
“Its an individual sport, so there are choices to make. you can always make choices. I see that some players say that there are rules imposed, etc. Except that these rules are imposed for bonuses. So you can zap the bonus, but it’s a choice you need to be ready to make if you wont to play less. There are also exhibitions to which players register, so it’s a bit contradictory,” Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, explained.
Djokovic, 38, exemplifies strategic scheduling, prioritizing major ATP tournaments and notably opting out of the Laver Cup this season.
