Virginia Man arrested in Hancock County Solicitation Case
NEW CUMBERLAND, WV – A Virginia resident is in custody and facing felony charges following an inquiry by the Hancock county Sheriff’s Department into online solicitation of a minor. Dustin McKinley Smith, 37, of Wise, Virginia, was arrested and transported to West Virginia to face allegations of using social media to engage with a 13-year-old Hancock County girl.
The case highlights the growing risks associated with online interactions and the commitment of local law enforcement to protecting children. Smith is charged with soliciting a minor and traveling to engage the minor in prohibited sexual activity, a violation of West Virginia Code 61-8-32(b). A conviction could result in a prison sentence of five to 30 years and fines up to $25,000.
Hancock County deputies initiated the investigation in early September after receiving reports of Smith’s alleged communication with the juvenile on social media platforms. Virginia law enforcement apprehended Smith at his residence and conducted a search prior to his extradition.
Smith is currently held at the West Virginia Northern Regional Jail on a $75,000 cash bond. Authorities indicate additional charges might potentially be filed as the investigation continues. A preliminary hearing in Hancock County Magistrate Court is pending.
