Title: Abel Martínez Seeks to Lift Embargo on City Council Debts

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic -‌ October 2, 2025 – Mayor Abel Martínez has petitioned a Dominican court too lift a retentive embargo placed on his accounts, a move swiftly opposed by legal counsel representing Francisco Reyes Acevedo. The challenge centers⁣ on a longstanding debt exceeding‌ 10 million ‍Dominican ⁤pesos. The dispute stems from ⁤a 2019 judgment against Martínez for failing to fulfill creditor settlement obligations. Despite over six years passing without ⁤the mayor addressing the debt through the City council, he recently ⁢sought judicial intervention‌ to release the funds held under embargo. This action prompted an immediate objection from Peña, the attorney for Reyes Acevedo, who asserts the original sentence remains fully enforceable.

“There is a sentence with the authority of the thing irrevocably judged that condemns Martínez to the payment of more ⁢than 10 million pesos,” Peña stated, emphasizing the finality of the court’s prior ruling. He further noted that a previous attempt by Martínez to challenge⁤ the judgment had been unsuccessful.

Currently, the court⁢ has suspended proceedings, indicating a decision is anticipated in the coming days. The ‍outcome will determine whether the embargo remains in place, compelling Martínez to satisfy the outstanding ⁢debt, or if he will⁤ regain access ⁢to the frozen funds.
