Ulleungdo Emergency Medical System Strengthened by Volunteer Efforts
Ulleung-gun, South Korea – October 2, 2025 – A collaborative effort involving volunteer workers at the Ulleung-gun Health Medical Center’s Emergency Office is bolstering emergency medical services for residents and visitors of Ulleungdo Island. The initiative aims to establish a high-quality medical system capable of effectively responding to critical patient needs on the remote island.
The increased capacity comes as Ulleungdo prepares for expanded air service, with “Island Air” planning public recruitment for staff and anticipated operation of routes between Sacheon and Ulsan beginning in the first half of 2026. This growth in accessibility underscores the urgency of a robust emergency response infrastructure. The Ulleung-gun Health Medical Center is also strengthening ties with organizations like the Dokdo Love Movement Headquarters, recently signing a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) under the banner of “Korea is World,” to further support the region’s healthcare needs.
The volunteer program supplements existing medical staff, providing crucial support during peak seasons and ensuring consistent coverage.Details regarding the specific number of volunteers and their roles were reported by KB Maeil journalist Kim Doo-han (kimdh@kbmaeil.com). Further reporting by Kim Doo-han highlights ongoing concerns regarding Ulleung Airport, specifically questioning claims of a high risk of bird collisions and instead focusing on the limitations of the airport’s 1200-meter runway.
