Understanding Sexual Health: A holistic View
Defining sexual health can be surprisingly complex. It’s a broad concept encompassing numerous facets of overall health and well-being, extending far beyond simply the absence of disease. Recognizing this complexity, the importance of sexual health has gained increasing attention over the years.
A pivotal moment came in 2001 when then U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher issued “The Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Promote Sexual Health and Responsible Sexual Behavior.” This landmark report marked the first official U.S.government acknowledgement of sexual health as a critical component of a healthy life. Satcher’s report highlighted the interconnectedness of sexual, physical, and mental health, stating:
“Sexual health is inextricably bound to both physical and mental health. Just as physical and mental health problems can contribute to sexual dysfunction and diseases, those dysfunctions and diseases can contribute to physical and mental health problems.Sexual health is not limited to the absence of disease or dysfunction, nor is its importance confined to just the reproductive years. It includes the ability to understand and weigh the risks, responsibilities, outcomes and impacts of sexual actions and to practice abstinence when appropriate. It includes freedom from sexual abuse and discrimination and the ability of individuals to integrate their sexuality into their lives, derive pleasure from it, and to reproduce if they so choose.”
This complete view is echoed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which emphasizes that sexual health is about more than just avoiding illness. The WHO definition underscores the importance of experiencing sexual pleasure and cultivating healthy relationships. According to the WHO:
“…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, and also the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.”
At ASHA, we recognize the multifaceted nature of sexual health and strive to encompass these vital elements in our understanding. We believe:
Sexual health is the ability to embrace and enjoy our sexuality throughout our lives, recognizing it as an integral part of our overall physical and emotional well-being.
ASHA firmly believes that everyone deserves access to the information and resources needed to achieve optimal sexual health.
