Carlton and Wrenshall ‌Schools finalize Consolidation Plans, Address debt and Board Composition

CARLTON, MN – The Carlton and Wrenshall school districts ⁣are moving forward with consolidation plans, agreeing to share any future operating debt and establishing a six-member school board with equal representation from both districts. The agreement, discussed in recent school board meetings, aims to minimize costs ‍and ensure community input as the districts ‍work toward⁢ a target consolidation date.

According⁤ to Carlton School Board‌ Chair Laura Nilsen, neither district⁤ currently carries operating debt,⁢ defined as a net negative unreserved general⁢ fund balance. Though, officials acknowledge⁤ the possibility of‍ incurring such debt⁢ before the consolidation is complete. To avoid additional expenses, the consolidated‌ boards intend to fill the new board thru resignations from⁤ existing members rather than holding special elections.

The future school board will consist of three members from the former Wrenshall district and three from Carlton, a structure described by a board member as “really fair.”

Discussions also centered on a name for the newly consolidated district. Proposals ranged from ‌the straightforward “Carlton-Wrenshall” to options reflecting the local landscape, including “Wild River Community School,” “Silver Creek,” “Bedrock Gorge Community School,” and “Rock Rapids Community School.” Board members referenced the recent⁣ consolidation of the Rock ridge Public Schools, which opted to forgo a hyphenated name to emphasize regional⁣ heritage. Naming the district after Jay Cooke State Park was also considered, though concerns⁤ were ⁣raised about‌ potential controversies surrounding historical⁤ figures.

“We want‌ everybody’s input, because, you know, we’re just 12 people out of two big communities,” said a board member, advocating for a community survey to determine the final name.
