Mets to Retain Carlos Mendoza as Manager for 2026 Season
FLUSHING, NY – Despite a important pitching collapse down the stretch, the new York Mets will retain Carlos Mendoza as manager for the 2026 season, according to reporting from SNY’s Andy Martino. the decision comes after a disappointing finish to the 2025 campaign, marked by struggles within the pitching staff following the trade deadline.
While the Mets’ front office is expected to make changes to the coaching staff, Mendoza will receive another chance to lead the team. This decision acknowledges that the pitching issues stemmed largely from personnel choices and injuries – including a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered by Griffin Canning in June – rather than managerial decisions.
The Mets’ rotation posted a 5.65 ERA after the trade deadline, the fourth-worst in major League Baseball. Attempts to bolster the bullpen also fell short of expectations, with Ryan Helsley struggling after arriving in Queens, while Gregory Soto was merely serviceable. Tyler Rogers proved to be an exception, delivering outstanding performance.
Top prospect Nolan McLean showed promise after being promoted in August, pitching like an ace, while late-season call-ups Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat had mixed results. Despite the pitching woes, Martino reported that “widespread” changes are anticipated within the coaching staff, even with Mendoza remaining in his role.
