Minneapolis to discuss Marshall Street Redesign,Aiming for Safety and Multi-Modal Access
MINNEAPOLIS,MN – Hennepin County officials will present finalized design concepts for a major overhaul of Marshall Street NE between 3rd Avenue and Lowry Avenue this Wednesday, aiming to address long-standing safety concerns and improve access for all users. The public meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the River Hub at Graco Park, located at 810 NE. Sibley St.
The planned reconstruction, slated to begin in 2027,follows a repaving project completed between Lowry and 37th avenues in 2023. The corridor currently handles approximately 10,800 vehicles daily, including cars and semi-trailer trucks, while serving a diverse area encompassing commercial, light industrial, and residential zones.
“The county has been looking to improve safety and comfort for people walking, biking, rolling and driving along the corridor since at least 2018,” explained Project Manager Kelly Agosto. ”We’ve been actively seeking community feedback to shape thes designs, and after several rounds of engagement, plans have really taken shape.”
The preferred designs propose a reconfigured street layout featuring one travel lane in each direction, complemented by a shared center turn lane. Key to the redesign is the inclusion of a separated two-way bike lane, alongside sidewalks, dedicated green space, and parking provisions – the latter varying depending on the specific section of the road.
The project stems from a 2018 study that initially identified the need for improvements along the busy north-south thoroughfare. County officials hope the redesign will create a more balanced and safer environment for all who utilize Marshall Street.
