Anaheim Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek addressed the media, focusing on the recent contract extension for Mason McTavish and evaluations of players in training camp. He also touched on potential trade deadline flexibility and the impact of the new playoff cap situation.
Verbeek confirmed the McTavish extension represents a “fair deal” for both sides, aligning with “fair market value” for a player of McTavish’s caliber. He declined to reveal specific comparable contracts used during negotiations. the extension includes full no-trade clauses in both of the final two years of the deal.
Regarding the upcoming season and potential roster adjustments, Verbeek indicated the ducks will explore opportunities to improve the team at the trade deadline, acknowledging the possibility of multiple trade windows – potentially one before the Olympic break and the customary deadline. He also noted the team will be closely monitoring how the league adjusts to the new playoff cap rules.
In camp evaluations, Verbeek highlighted the progress of forward Beckett Sennecke. He noted Sennecke is becoming more agreeable with the NHL’s pace of play, emphasizing the need for consistent effort and physicality. Verbeek pointed to Sennecke’s offensive talent and vision but stressed the importance of improving defensive details, puck protection, and awareness. he expects Sennecke to continue developing over the next week to ten days.
Concerning McTavish’s arrival from practicing with the Ottawa 67s, Verbeek plans to ease him into camp over the first three days to assess his conditioning and adjustment to the NHL pace. He intends to have McTavish participate in the final exhibition game and several practices before the season opener in Seattle, believing the timing is optimal for his integration.
