Žalgiris Nearly ⁢Landed Rising Star Before Morning’s Selection

Kaunas, lithuania – September 25, 2024 – A promising young guard now ⁢with another EuroLeague team was on Žalgiris Kaunas’ radar before ultimately being drafted, ⁤revealing a close call for ‍the Lithuanian powerhouse. ⁢The player, who wished to remain anonymous, detailed a near agreement with the club and cited ‍Damian Lillard as a key inspiration throughout his career.

The ‌rookie ⁤recounted ⁣a recruitment process ⁤that ‌stalled only due to⁣ being selected in the draft, a scenario ‌that would have seen ⁤him potentially joining the Žalgiris roster this season. This revelation underscores Žalgiris’ active pursuit of talent and highlights ‌the competitive landscape for securing emerging players ⁣in⁣ European basketball, particularly those who defy ⁢conventional‌ size expectations for guards. The‍ increasing trust in smaller, skilled players across Europe is a trend‌ the rookie embraces, referencing TJ Shorts as a personal ⁤favorite.

“The biggest thing is his story,” the player said of⁤ Damian Lillard, a ⁢fellow Weber State University⁢ alumnus. “he⁢ was always underrated ⁤- in high school, college, even in the NBA. Maybe it was because ⁤of ⁤his height, but more ⁤because he had a desire to prove ‌himself. A lot‍ of people ‍said he couldn’t do certain things or be effective at the NBA or college‌ level. He proved them⁤ wrong ⁤over and over and over.”

He‌ drew parallels⁢ to his own ⁣journey,‌ noting consistent underestimation based on stature, which he consistently overcame with⁣ performance. “That was my story ⁣too.‌ Maybe because of my height, ⁤but every⁢ time I got an possibility, I showed I could be productive.”

While contact⁤ with Lillard has lessened recently, the⁣ rookie valued the advice he received. “I used to reach out to him, ask for some advice – he always responded. Very down-to-earth, genuine guy.” The most impactful⁢ guidance, he shared, was simple:‍ “Just be yourself no matter the situation. Wherever you play,be yourself. Ultimately, basketball is basketball, it’s a game I’ve been playing as I was little. The same moves, ‌the same things. Just be yourself at⁤ all levels.”

The player also expressed optimism about the‍ growing acceptance‍ of smaller ‍guards ⁣in European basketball. “Shoutout to all the small guards. TJ Shorts is one⁣ of my favorite‍ players. I’ve played against him in the FIBA⁣ Champions ⁣League.I love ‍his game. I think if you can play, you⁢ can play irrespective of your height. You go out [on the court] and find out. I don’t ‍no why some teams look down on ⁢smaller ‍defenders. Give us a chance and we will show you what we can do.”
