Plymouth Argyle U21s Suffer 6-2 Defeat in Front of Record Crowd
Plymouth Argyle’s Under-21s endured a challenging night, falling to a 6-2 defeat despite a late consolation goal. The match,played in front of a crowd approaching 5,000 – the largest for an Under-21s fixture in some time – saw Argyle concede heavily,equaling their largest margin of defeat in the competition.
The home side dominated the first half, taking a commanding lead. Mathias Ross opened the scoring with a header from Finn’s corner within five minutes. Brendan Wiredu nearly doubled the advantage moments later, hitting the crossbar with a header. Yusuf Akhamrich,Argyle’s primary attacking threat,had a shot saved,but Plymouth continued to press,with Finn scoring a half-volley on 20 minutes after a partially cleared throw-in. Bim Pepple extended the lead to three just eight minutes later, heading in Finn’s cross.
Luca Gunter made two strong saves to deny Pepple, but Owen Oseni added a fourth goal four minutes before halftime, rounding Gunter and slotting the ball into an empty net.
The second half saw an improved performance from Argyle, with Akhamrich going close twice. However, Finn scored again on 53 minutes, finishing a move down the right with a shot that went in off the far post, assisted by substitute Owen Dale.
Akhamrich’s individual effort was narrowly wide before a short pass to captain Russell-Denny resulted in a shot that squeezed under goalkeeper Conor Hazard, giving Argyle their first goal on 57 minutes. Despite the improved showing, Dale assisted Campbell in making it 6-1 with a powerful finish late in the game.
Argyle managed a consolation in stoppage time when pele Arganese-McDermott headed home a rebound from Harry Byrne’s throw-in, finished by irow, bringing the final score to 6-2.
