Family Comedy ‘Bubák’ Arrives in Czech Cinemas, Confronting Childhood Fears

The Czech family comedy Bubák premiered in cinemas nationwide, offering a blend of scares and humor aimed at audiences of all ages. Directed by Tomáš Pavlíček, the film centers on twelve-year-old nikča and six-year-old Tomáš, left to their own devices for a weekend when their parents are away. Their plans for pizza and a horror movie take an unexpected turn with a series of unsettling encounters.

Bubák explores the universal experience of childhood fears,presenting a narrative where the protagonists face not only mischievous adults-a hungover friend and a visiting graduate-but also the titular “Bubák,” a creature under the bed. The film aims to be both entertaining and cathartic, allowing viewers to confront and laugh at the anxieties that frequently enough haunt young imaginations. Pavlíček explains, “We tried to be a combination of a little scary film and more comedy. Bubák is there, but he is not so terribly scary, we want both small and big spectators to laugh during the film… To defeat the fear of your childhood.”

The story unfolds as Nikča attempts to bribe his younger brother into staying in his room while he entertains a friend, only to find Tomáš’s fear of the Bubák complicates matters. The film promises a lighthearted approach to overcoming anxieties, suggesting that facing one’s fears can be a shared and humorous experience.
