Sultana Halts Legal Action in Dispute with Corbyn Over New Political Party
London,October 29,2023 – Zarah Sultana, the MP for Coventry South, has announced she will drop legal proceedings against Jeremy Corbyn following a public disagreement over their jointly-founded political party. The move comes after Sultana accused Corbyn and othre self-reliant MPs of sidelining her and operating a ”sexist boys’ club.”
The dispute centered on the launch of a paid membership system for “Your Party,” the political outfit established by Sultana and the former Labor leader in July. Corbyn disowned a message encouraging supporters to sign up, labeling it an “unauthorised email,” and later advised against using the “supposed membership portal,” citing legal advice.
Sultana had previously stated she instructed “specialist defamation lawyers” after being the ”subject of a number of false and defamatory statements” regarding the membership launch. Though, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) Sunday, she declared, “For the sake of the party, and as an act of good faith, I will not be pursuing legal proceedings despite the baseless and unsubstantiated allegations against me.”
Acknowledging the demoralizing effect of the quarrel, Sultana expressed her desire to “reconcile and move forward,” confirming she is currently in discussions with Corbyn, whom she described as having her “respect.”
The disagreement highlights ongoing tensions between the two MPs regarding the party’s direction. The party, which is yet to finalize its name or hold an annual conference, had reportedly gained momentum, with Sultana claiming over 750,000 supporters had signed up.
Sultana and six other Labour MPs were suspended last year for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap, prompting her decision to leave the Labour party and establish the new political force.
