A’ja Wilson Makes WNBA History as first 4-Time MVP
LAS VEGAS - A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces has been named the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player for the 2024 season, becoming the first player in league history to win the award four times. The declaration cements Wilson’s place as a dominant force in the WNBA and caps a remarkable season where she led the league in both points and blocks per game.
Wilson shared the Defensive player of the Year award this season wiht Alanna Smith, further showcasing her all-around impact. She averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 3.2 blocks per game, while boasting a league-leading player efficiency rating (PER) of 33.4. This individual achievement arrives as the Aces secured the second-best record in the league at 34-10.
For much of the season, Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx was considered the frontrunner for her first MVP award. The Lynx raced to a 20-4 record before the All-Star break, and Collier was a driving force, averaging 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game on 53.1% shooting. She also improved her three-point shooting, hitting 40.3% on a career-high 3.8 attempts per game, resulting in a career-best PER of 30.2.
However, a late-season ankle sprain sidelined Collier for 11 games, halting her MVP momentum. During that time,Wilson surged,capitalizing on the opportunity to strengthen her case. Wilson missed onyl four games and ultimately convinced voters of her superior overall impact, securing her fourth MVP title.The Lynx finished the regular season with a 34-10 record, earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
