Nevada County Receives State ‘Prohousing‘ Designation, Primed for increased Housing Funding
Nevada City, Calif. – Nevada County has earned a coveted ‘Prohousing’ designation from the California Department of Housing and Community Advancement, recognizing the county’s proactive steps to address the state’s housing crisis. The designation signals a commitment to accelerating housing production, reducing costs, and expanding housing opportunities for residents.
this achievement positions Nevada County to perhaps receive priority access to state funding earmarked for housing-related projects, a critical benefit as the county works to address a notable shortage of affordable homes. The ’Prohousing’ designation isn’t simply an award; it’s a validation of the Board of Supervisors’ ongoing efforts to remove barriers to housing development and ensure a stable future for the county’s workforce and families.
The county’s success stems from a multi-pronged approach prioritizing housing and homelessness solutions. Recent initiatives include establishing housing and homelessness as key Board objectives, streamlining regulations for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) – such as tiny houses and in-law units – and approving tiny houses on wheels as a viable permanent housing option. Simultaneously, the county has increased support for homeless services and focused on addressing encampments.
“Earning California’s Prohousing designation is a proud milestone for our County,” stated Board of Supervisors Chair Heidi Hall. “It affirms our commitment to tackling the housing crisis and ensure we can have housing for our teachers, health care workers, firefighters, and all our working families.”
The ‘Prohousing’ designation is awarded to communities demonstrating a commitment to policies that facilitate housing development and address regional housing needs.
