Garner Edges ​Southeast Raleigh in GNRC Showdown

GARNER, N.C. – Garner High School secured⁢ a hard-fought 28-26 victory over No. 13 Southeast Raleigh Friday⁢ night, maintaining their strong start to the season and solidifying their position in the Greater Neuse River Conference.The win moves Garner to 4-1 continuing a trend of success under head coach Deron Donald, who⁢ has ‌yet ​to oversee a losing season ⁢in his five years leading a ⁣programme.

The matchup between the Trojans and‍ the Bulldogs carries important weight,⁤ representing​ the 56th meeting between the two schools. Millbrook’s win⁣ on opening night gave the Wildcats a 28-27 series advantage all-time. Garner’s victory was especially notable given Southeast’s recent resurgence under coach ⁣Edwin Campbell, who has orchestrated a‍ turnaround after the Trojans won⁤ onyl two games during the 2021 Covid spring season.The game showcased the growing competitiveness of the GNRC, a conference that ‍has evolved alongside the expansion of‌ the Wake County Public School System from a dozen high schools in⁤ the mid-1990s​ to its current 31.

Garner established a led through a balanced offensive attack. A.Wallace opened the ⁢scoring with a 7-yard run, followed by touchdowns from C.Ormandy (22-yard run) and ⁢T. McPhatter (12-yard run). Southeast ​responded with passing touchdowns⁢ from T. Powell​ Jr.⁣ to C. Freeman (41 yards), ​T.Whyte (12 yards), and C. bullock‌ (8 yards), along ⁢with a rushing touchdown by J. Adams IV (1-yard run). A⁤ late touchdown run by A. Randle proved⁢ to be the decisive score for Garner.

The Trojans dominated the rushing game, ⁤totaling 231 yards⁣ on 44 carries compared to Southeast’s 15 yards on 12 ⁢attempts. T. McPhatter led Garner’s ground attack with 90 yards on 13⁢ carries,while C. freeman paced Southeast with 16 rushing yards. Southeast’s passing game proved effective, with T. Powell Jr. completing 13 of 25 passes for 245 yards⁤ and one touchdown. Garner’s C. Ormandy completed 14 of 19 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown.

Former Garner standout ‍Nyheim Hines, now a veteran of the NFL with the Colts and‍ Bills, was in attendance to witness the contest.
