Scorsese, DiCaprio & Lawrence to Reunite for New Film ‘What Happens At Night‘
Martin Scorsese is set to direct Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in What Happens At Night, a new film based on the Peter Cameron novel, with Patrick Marber penning the script. The project is currently finalizing a distribution deal, with apple emerging as a likely landing place given its previous collaborations with Scorsese and DiCaprio on Killers of the Flower Moon and existing first-look deals with both Scorsese’s Sikelia and DiCaprio’s Appian Way production banners.
The film reunites a powerhouse trio following their prosperous collaborations. DiCaprio and Scorsese previously teamed on Shutter Island, known for its similar sleight-of-hand storytelling, while Lawrence recently appeared alongside Robert Pattinson in Die, My Love, a film produced by Scorsese. What Happens At Night marks a shift for Scorsese, who initially intended to only produce the adaptation after acquiring the rights through Studiocanal in spring 2023, while developing other projects following Killers of the Flower Moon.
The story centers on a married American couple traveling to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They find themselves in a largely deserted hotel and encounter a cast of enigmatic characters – a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer – as they navigate the complexities of the adoption and their own relationship. As the couple attempts to claim their baby, they begin to question their understanding of themselves and their life together.
DiCaprio had considered other projects, including a Damien Chazelle-directed Evel Knievel biopic, but those plans were ultimately shelved. Lawrence’s Die, My Love premiered at Cannes, where Mubi acquired it for a November release. Scorsese is now focused on casting the remaining eccentric character roles for What Happens At Night.
