Tangerang HIV Cases: 4 Toddlers Infected in Womb

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Tangerang, Indonesia Health officials in Tangerang‍ Regency have identified four children under five ⁤years old who were infected⁣ with HIV, with transmission occurring in utero from⁣ their mothers. The cases were reported in ⁣2025, according to Hendra Tarmizi, Head of ⁣the ⁤Tangerang regency Health Office.

“If there are‍ four people ⁤this year, on average its ⁣because their mothers ⁢were pregnant and HIV-positive. So, thay have ⁣been exposed since the womb,” Hendra said ‍on friday, ‍September 19, 2025.

Thes ⁢cases contribute to a total of 374‌ HIV/AIDS cases recorded in Tangerang Regency throughout 2025, ‌with the⁢ majority of those infected falling within the 25-60 age⁣ range.

Health officials emphasize that mother-to-child ‍transmission can be prevented through cesarean delivery, but only if the mother’s‌ HIV ‌status is known ⁤prior to labor. “Usually, if birth is vaginal, there is a risk of exposure, but if it ‌is a cesarean section, it can be avoided,” Hendra explained.

The four toddlers are currently receiving intensive treatment with pediatric-specific antiretroviral drugs. “The medicine is the same as⁣ for adults, only with different dosages,” Hendra added.

The Health ⁤Office‌ attributes the majority of HIV transmissions in Tangerang to risky sexual behavior and,‌ less commonly, blood transfusions. To combat the spread, the ⁤Tangerang Regency Health Office is collaborating with community organizations ⁤to conduct health screenings, having tested 4,000 individuals, resulting in the ⁢identification of the 374 positive cases.

“We urge the public not to have sexual relations outside of ‍marriage because it‌ is very ⁢risky,” Hendra‌ stated.
