Contra Costa County – A Caltrans employee was fatally struck by an asphalt truck early this morning while working in a construction zone on Highway 4 in Contra Costa County. The incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by transportation workers and highlights Caltrans’ ongoing commitment to safety protocols.
mahdi Khorram, 39, of Concord, died at approximately 1:30 a.m. He had been with caltrans since 2023, serving as a transportation engineer – construction inspector. He is survived by his wife and three-year-old child. This tragedy brings the total number of Caltrans workers lost on the job as 1921 to 195.
“Mahdi was more than a colleague – he was a valued member of our Caltrans family,” saeid Caltrans Director Dina El-Tawansy. “His tragic death is a devastating loss to his family, friends and for all his colleagues. I extend my heartfelt prayers and deepest sympathy to his loved ones and all who knew and worked with him.”
In remembrance of Khorram,flags will be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol,Capitol Annex Swing Space,and all Caltrans buildings. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Caltrans will cooperate fully with the inquiry and review safety procedures to prevent future tragedies.
