Sparta Snatch Dramatic Shootout Win Over Nidaros After Plexiglass Delays
Trondheim, Norway – Sparta Sarpsborg secured a thrilling shootout victory over Nidaros in Leangen Arena on Thursday, overcoming two meaningful delays caused by shattered plexiglass and a steadfast comeback from the hosts. The final score saw Sparta emerge victorious after a 2-2 draw, earning them a valuable bonus point.
Sparta got off to a flying start, with Magnus Eisenmens finding the back of the net just 59 seconds into the first period, assisted by Adam Millén and Jonathan Hermansson. They doubled their lead shortly after, with Jesper Lilleberg scoring, again with an assist from the influential Adam Millén.
However, the game’s momentum was repeatedly interrupted. Midway through the first period, play was halted due to a large crack appearing in the plexiglass, requiring a lengthy repair. The disruption occurred again late in the period, this time on the opposite side of the ice, forcing players to the locker room while the arena staff worked to replace the damaged glass and resurface the ice.
Despite the interruptions, Sparta maintained their composure. Nidaros, however, began to mount a comeback in the second period, with ludwig Wistén scoring at 34:49 to reduce the deficit to 2-1. Wistén struck again in the third period, leveling the score at 53:59 and forcing the game into overtime.
Overtime failed to produce a winner, leading to a penalty shootout – Sparta’s second consecutive game decided this way. After a tense five rounds of penalty shots with no resolution, the shootout went to a sudden-death format. It was Adam millén who ultimately secured the win for Sparta on his twelfth attempt, sending the bonus point back to Sarpsborg.
“It was a bit of luck that we got the points when it developed as it did, but we have a good keeper who saves us,” Sparta coach Jonas Holøs told SA after the match, acknowledging the team’s reliance on strong goaltending. Holøs noted sparta dominated the first period, but conceded Nidaros were the stronger side in the third.
Sparta will now return home to face Vålerenga on Saturday, September 20th at Sparta Amfi. Holøs anticipates a tougher challenge against Vålerenga, viewing his team as the underdog in that upcoming contest, despite being favored in their first two matches of the season.
