Lamens Reaches Seoul Quarterfinals with First Top 20 Victory
Suzan Lamens advanced too the quarterfinals of the hard court tournament in Seoul today, defeating Diana Sjnaider 6-4, 6-4. The win marks the first time the South Holland native, currently ranked 64th in the world, has overcome a player ranked within the WTA’s top 20 at a tour-level event.
This breakthrough comes after Lamens previously secured a victory against a top player during Billie jean King Cup competition last year, when she defeated then-world number ten Jelena Ostapenko. The Seoul result signifies a new level of consistency for the Dutch player, demonstrating her ability to translate success from team events to individual tournaments and establishing her as a rising force on the WTA tour.
Lamens faced Sjnaider, ranked 19th, having previously lost to the Russian in three sets at a tournament in Hong Kong last year, where Sjnaider ultimately claimed the title. in Seoul, Lamens overcame an early 2-4 deficit in the first set, winning eight consecutive games to seize control and ultimately take the set. A strong second serve proved pivotal in her success.
Sjnaider, who recently won the title in Monterrey, mounted a brief comeback in the second set, narrowing the score to 4-3, but Lamens maintained her composure and secured the victory.
