Creamean Leads Penn State Men’s Golf at Canadian Intercollegiate
TORONTO, ON – Penn State men’s golf concluded play at the Canadian Intercollegiate this week, led by strong performances from Alex Creamean and freshman Jackson Saroney. The Nittany Lions finished the tournament 19-over 883,with Notre Dame claiming the championship at 35-under,ten strokes ahead of second-place Michigan.
Penn state recorded its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a 1-under 287. Missouri finished third at 13-under, followed by Rutgers (11-under) and UNCW (9-under) to round out the top five.
Creamean consistently challenged for the lead throughout the week and delivered an outstanding final round. Saroney also posted a red number on Tuesday, firing a 1-under 71, highlighted by birdies on two of his final four holes.He finished the week at 8-over 224, tying for 40th position.
Local player Zach Smith opened with an even-par 72 but finished 49th at 13-over 229. Senior Andres Barraza finished the week at 16-over, while junior Tim Peters was disqualified after the second round for signing an incorrect score. Despite the disqualification, Peters showcased resilience with a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, featuring an eagle on the Par-5 13th and a birdie finish on 12. Freshman Nick Werner, competing as an individual, carded 31-over for the week.
“The course conditions were impeccable all week. Good play was rewarded and bad play punished as demonstrated by the low winning score and the high scores on the back end,” commented head coach Mark Leon. “We had outstanding play from Alex Creamean, who was in the mix all week and registered an outstanding final round. It was also encouraging to see the resilience of Jackson Saroney in his first tournament as a freshman. He improved every day and was able to close with an under-par round for us.”
Penn State will next compete at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational hosted by West virginia University at the Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
