Hyderabad was struck by a sudden, intense downpour Wednesday evening, causing widespread flooding and traffic disruptions across the city. Northern and western neighborhoods experienced the heaviest rainfall,with some areas reporting over 97 mm.
The deluge overwhelmed drainage systems, leaving major roads submerged and snarling traffic for commuters.Power outages were reported in multiple localities as the storm intensified from scattered showers to a heavy downpour. The Telangana State Growth Planning Society (TGDPS) recorded a peak rainfall of 97.5 mm at the JP Nagar Community Hall in chandanagar.
Areas including Serilingampally, Miyapur, Chandanagar, Kukatpally, RC Puram, and parts of Secunderabad – specifically Uppal, Kapra, Musheerabad, near Osmania University, and Malkajgiri – were significantly impacted. MMTS Lingampally registered 82.3 mm of rain, while the University of Hyderabad in Serilingampally and the Gachibowli area received 81.3 mm and 66.5 mm respectively. PJR Stadium in Chandanagar recorded 64.8 mm.
further rainfall was reported in Secunderabad’s Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Alwal, Kapra, ECIL crossroads, Dr. A.S. Rao Nagar,Safilguda,Moula Ali,Tarnaka,and habsiguda. Motorists faced considerable difficulty navigating the waterlogged streets, and authorities have not yet released estimates on the extent of the disruption or restoration timelines. The incident underscores the city’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall and the ongoing need for improved infrastructure to mitigate flooding.
