PSG Sporting Director luis Campos Details Transfer Strategy, Donnarumma Departure
PARIS – September 15, 2025 – Paris Saint-Germain Sporting Director Luis Campos today offered extensive insight into the club’s recent transfer activity and contract negotiations, emphasizing a merit-based approach and a focus on strengthening the team’s tactical structure.
Campos revealed the club’s recruitment decisions are heavily influenced by input from the coaching staff. “In all my career, when I have the obligation of the sports sector,I have always listened to my coaches well. This is one of the secrets of my successes,” he stated. He specifically cited coach Luis Enrique’s vision for the team, including the need for a central defender with specific characteristics and a new goalkeeper. Campos explained the rationale behind prioritizing a central defender over a right back, citing the increasing demand for size and ball-playing ability in modern football. “We have many more direct games today. You have to get size, a player at ease with the ball. you must have more solutions and variables.”
The departure of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was also addressed. campos attributed the move to a breakdown in contract extension negotiations, stating, “Donnarumma is a set of circumstances that lead to his departure. When he requests a salary at the PSG before, not current PSG… Our policy is very linked to merit, you earn more when you deserve it.” He expressed surprise at Donnarumma’s initial demands, adding, “It was difficult at the start to understand the requirements of Donnarumma.” He noted the coach’s willingness to explore options to strengthen the team with the ball, leading to the arrival of Lucas Chevalier. “When we can make PSG more French, we will do it.”
Looking ahead, Campos affirmed PSG’s financial stability, citing profits from Champions League participation and the Club World Cup. “Even in this year of great difficulty for French football, we have green accounts thanks to the LDC and the World Cup of clubs. We have made money on the ground.” He also highlighted the club’s growing appeal to players. “The players want to sign at PSG, it’s a force today… it will be much easier to recruit. Because the brand is much stronger.” Campos indicated PSG is prepared to make further recruitment decisions in January or next summer, in collaboration with the coach and president.
