Janitor Assaulted by Martín de los Santos faces Further Surgery, Family Receives Psychological Care
Santiago, Chile – Four months after a violent attack by 32-year-old Martín de los Santos, 70-year-old building janitor Guillermo Oyarzún remains unable to return to work and requires additional surgery due to severe eye injuries. The ongoing ordeal has extended beyond Oyarzún’s physical recovery, deeply impacting his entire family who are now receiving psychological treatment.
Oyarzún was brutally assaulted by de los Santos, who is currently detained in Brazil awaiting extradition. The attack has left the 70-year-old worker on medical leave, creating financial hardship for his family and disrupting a work routine he cherished for 28 years at the building where he was employed. “We cannot work, my wallet shrinks, we depend on what the mutual gives us,” Oyarzún told Mega.”They are already doing my eye analysis and let’s see what ends.” He fondly recalled his work schedule, entering at 11 PM and leaving at 7 AM, Monday through Friday.
The emotional toll on Oyarzún’s family is meaningful. His wife, María Vidal, expressed continued frustration over the delay in de los Santos’ extradition. “We are still waiting for this man to bring him. My husband still is in medical treatment, he is still licensed and we don’t know how long,” she stated. Vidal revealed that their children are also undergoing therapy to cope with the trauma of witnessing the attack and its aftermath. “They are all with psychological treatment, because they were affected with what happened, because of seeing their dad as they left, how their dad was, they were crashed,” she explained.
despite the severity of the attack, oyarzún expressed a surprising degree of forgiveness towards his assailant, stating, “in the background, I don’t have the goat bad, as I was in that flying wave.” He awaits the results of his latest eye analysis, hoping for a path towards recovery and a return to normalcy for himself and his family.
