STORRS, Conn. – No. 8 Harvard Field Hockey defeated No. 16 uconn 2-0 on Wednesday, extending it’s winning streak to four games and securing its first 4-0 start to a season since 2021. The Crimson were propelled by goals from senior forward Bente van der Meer le Huray and a strong defensive performance led by junior goalkeeper Ellie Burger.
Le Huray opened the scoring in the first half, converting a penalty corner chance. The second goal came late in the fourth quarter, sparked by a counterattack initiated by junior forward Sage Piekarski, who found le Huray in the circle. This marks the first time le Huray has scored in consecutive contests during her Harvard career.
Burger recorded her first collegiate shutout with four saves, all coming in the second half, earning her the title of ivy League Defensive Player of the Week. UConn threatened throughout the game, especially on penalty corners, but Burger consistently denied the hosts, including a pair of kick saves in the third quarter.
Harvard outshot UConn 10-8, with eight of the Crimson’s shots on target. The victory marks Harvard’s second ranked win of the season and its third consecutive win against UConn – the program’s longest winning streak in the series.The Crimson have also won five straight road contests.
Harvard begins Ivy League play on Friday, Sept. 19,hosting Dartmouth at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
