DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team suffered a 7-0 defeat against Clark University in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at granger Athletic Complex. The Corsairs now hold a 1-5 overall record, while Clark improves to an undefeated 5-0 on the season.
The loss highlights the challenges UMass Dartmouth faces as they navigate a demanding early-season schedule and seek to build momentum in a competitive Division III landscape. Clark’s strong start underscores their position as a team to watch in the New England region.
Clark initiated the scoring wiht a goal from Alison Kopec early in the first period. Despite a defensive save from junior captain Sophia Bouffard, the corsairs trailed 1-0 at the end of the first. Clark extended their lead in the second period with two consecutive goals, followed by another from Kopec, establishing a 4-0 advantage at halftime.
The Cougars continued their offensive pressure in the third period, scoring once more before a shot on goal by UMass Dartmouth junior Brooke Lydon was saved by Clark’s Rachel Reiter. Clark added two final goals in the last four minutes of the game, solidifying their 7-0 victory.
Lydon and senior captain Lillian Bento each registered a shot on frame for UMass Dartmouth, while Arlene Johnson and Carly Wang contributed one shot apiece. Corsair goalie Shane Cueman recorded a total of 17 saves, conceding seven goals. Clark’s Reiter made two saves in the first half, with Loren Root completing the game in goal for the Cougars.
UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16,with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game at Salve Regina University.
